A suburban lot with tight setbacks and a marked slope offers a unique opportunity to create this residence for a young Mediterranean family. Our clients characterized themselves as “phototropic”; hence the project is designed to maximize northern light and southern solar gain. The volume enclosing entry lobby, library, living-dining, and kitchen creates an urban edge on the tree-lined street. More private areas such as the bedrooms and family room are situated around an atrium and garden. The house is clad in a naturally weathering copper skin, stretched over a cast-in place concrete structure. Ample insulated glazing reveals precise street views and opens the public rooms to the garden.
