The Hamm Music College project involves converting and extending a 70s building.

The extension is created by lengthening the originally square building and by the striking addition of another storey rising above the square in front of the entrance. This volume concept and the shape of the roof, a concave longitudinal curve, give the Music School a character that expresses its cultural implications. The sculptural effect made by the shape of the building also defines an important location in central Hamm, giving it the impact of a landmark.

The extension houses above all the two halls, as well as teaching, office and function rooms. The halls are placed directly beneath the curved roof.

The curved line of the roof silhouette derives from the load-bearing structure, and not just from the spatial conditions. It is a wide-spanned construction that transfers forces from the trusses into the end walls. The load-bearing structure of the old building does not have to be reinforced.

The façades are presented as perforated facing formwork rendered in white.
