Inside the Milton Gate lies James Square, one of the many green spaces that make up McGill University’s downtown campus. It was imperative that the square’s new design implement the policies of the university's sustainable development plan. These included increasing vegetation cover and improving pedestrian safety. Special consideration was given to improving pedestrian routes and site lighting, as well as reducing the presence of vehicles around the perimeter of the square. Particular attention was paid to providing persons with reduced mobility a space that was as interesting to them as it was to the campus’ able-bodied population. Finally, four works of art from the university’s collection were integrated into the design of the site.
