Trekløveret is a 4 story kindergarten and nursery for 104 children in the age from 0 to 5 years. The project is situated in a dense urban area in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, adapted to the site with a fine sensibility to the surrounding context in terms of scale, proportions and material.
The aim is to incorporate a “children’s universe”, as a Babels Tower, throughout the building, from the 1rd to the 4th floor, providing outdoor spaces on all levels. There are two vertical connections in the building, one outside and one inside.
Outside the ground level playground and the “sky-workshop” at the 4th floor are connected by a continuous playground, made up by offset plateaus, terraces, stairs and slides, folding up and creating outdoor spaces on all levels. The inner connection is an intimate staircase, winding upwards in a spiral movement ending in a top light. Travelling this stair case to the top of the building, one passes various windows and niches with views of the city life below. The facades and windows are shaped in regard to views, daylight and spatial qualities within each room, while the footprint of the building is adjusted to functional and technical needs.
The sustainable strategy of the building starts with a rational concrete structure, wrapped in a comforting and protective skin/screen which can be freely detached from its core in order to create sheltered outside spaces, sun screening, enclosed stairs and storage. The tone of the skin aims to integrate with the surrounding historic brick buildings.
