An extension of an existing hospital in the highly-dense district of Marka . The old building included public areas, staff rooms and offices, while the new addition housed pure medical functions and operation rooms up to the highest medical standards.
The ribs that surround and protect the breathing lungs in the human body have been used as the main design metaphor where the hospital represents a breathing lung supported by folding GRC panels, that protect the interior from environmental factors and infiltrate light. The GRC panels wrap the elevations and extend to shade the rooftop, creating shaded gardens and green pockets on the roof. Such pockets act as recovery and recreational areas for patients; making up for the lack of clean open spaces or public recreational plazas in the surrounding context of Marka.
