The extension to this grammar school, built in 1975, was an effective way of reorganising the urban space and creating a fitting prelude to Würzburg’s baroque old town. The structure’s geometry echoes that of neighbouring buildings. The use of copper in traditional local house construction was reinterpreted and applied in a contemporary way, thus becoming a unifying stylistic element. The new building turns towards the old building, opening up to it and making the central yard into an open-air connecting element. The glazed stairwell allows light to penetrate as far as the ground floor. The structure’s asymmetrical orientation creates light-filled access areas with views of the city and of the Marienberg.
