KölnTriangle has introduced a graceful presence to the city’s skyline in the form of a tower whose gently convex reuleaux-shaped plan evolved from a consideration of factors such as wind loads and solar gain. The triangular plan combines with a spherical core to generate an adaptable floorplate that offers a variety of work spaces, from open-plan areas to individual offices. A single-skin facade wraps two of the building’s elevations while the south-facing elevation features a glazed double skin with automated vents drawing in fresh air to ventilate the building as required. Aluminium louvres incorporated into the double skin reduce solar gain without impeding views outwards or compromising the appearance of the elegantly sheer facade. The building also employs a range of sustainable features, including geothermal heat pumps, a heat-recovery system, activation of the thermal mass and a decentralised ventilation system which allows the individual environmental regulation of each floor. The entrance to the building is marked a generous 600m² lobby and a planted internal courtyard, both of which can be hired for events. A public viewing gallery at the apex of the tower offers spectacular panoramic views out across the city and provides an unrivalled prospect of Cologne Cathedral.
