The lighting design for the Town Hall Square in Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg) has contributed to a new mood in the center of the city; the square is appealing due its ambience, inviting people to tarry for a moment there.
The lighting designers formulated the following goals at the time of the competition:
Creation of a differentiated, glare-free overall mood in the evening hours, characterized by a high level of visual comfort. Generation of a highly attractive feeling of space in the square. Emphasis on the Town Hall as the square’s “main character” through discrete lighting of the façade. Illumination of the façade by means of wall floodlights mounted in the ground and linear lighting elements on the cornices.
Three columns with extendable booms and a height of 13 meters each were designed, which not only provide direct lighting of the square but also serve as a support for flags on festive occasions.
Attachments mounted on the façade flank the square on all sides and provide light for building forecourts. The edges of two glass underground garage exits were marked with linear light as well as the new bus stop. Groups of trees are discretely accentuated by uplights mounted in the ground, the splendid fountain brought out by light filament optics in the water jets.
