The city of Linz is growing quickly and will continue to grow in the foreseeable future. Especially the number of children and youth is increasing disproportionately – in the past few years the city has experienced a real baby boom. Thus, the city urgently needs schools and childcare facilities which can be easily extended in the future. This is what makes the project special: it is designed with the future in mind. In a short amount of time the building can be extended by an additional story in wood construction – thus growth is built into the design.
The position of the new building on the site creates a “play street” between it and the existing school. This protected zone between the two buildings is the heart of the entire complex.
The interior is state of the art: clusters are positioned around open “marketplaces”, rooms are used for multiple functions, the space is open and highly flexible. Direct access to terrasses and outdoor spaces supplement the learning landscape. These spatial qualities reflect current research - the building acts as the “third teacher” in support of teaching staff. Despite the fluid transitions between spaces, the after-school care for youth (10 – 14 years) and for primary school children (6 – 10 years) are clearly separated.
