Planning a house in Iwakura City, Aichi Prefecture. The site is surrounded by buildings on three sides, and the north side faces a park. We had two major requests for this project. The first was to create a closed yet liberating space without opening up too much to the surrounding environment. The second was to create a floor plan that would allow the family to feel the presence of each other and to have a variety of places to live. The second was to create a floor plan with a variety of places for the family to stay while feeling the presence of the family. The space was to be a two-story volume with privacy-needing spaces inserted at the four corners like pillars, and the space between the pillars was to be the LDK, a common space with a large atrium, and a large skylight at the top. In this way, the openness of the space is created by the height of the building, and the natural light from above creates a sense of brightness and the changing of the light. All the rooms are adjacent to the stairwell to benefit from the brightness of the skylight, and to facilitate communication with the family from various locations across the stairwell. In addition, all of the second floor areas are connected by bridges. While this facilitates the smooth flow of daily life, the loft-like spaces are interspersed to create many places to stay and at the same time to create communication between the upper and lower floors. The plan was to create a comfortable space for the family and a sense of nature without sacrificing usability while having a variety of places.
