The Zaha Hadid-designed MAXXI Museum in Rome may close in response to a large hole in the institution's accounts. The museum, which opened only two years ago, won the RIBA Stirling Prize.
Rome’s National Museum of XXI Century Arts (MAXXI) opened in 2010 to much fanfare and garnered designer Zaha Hadid the 2010 RIBA Stirling Prize.. Barely two years later, Lorenzo Ornaghi, Italy's culture and heritage minister, is threatening the museum’s closure, citing losses of €800,000 in 2011. Museum administrators blame cuts in government funding, according to the Guardian. A mid-May deadline will bring a decision from the Italian government on the museum's future.
