La Biennale di Venezia has launched Biennale Architettura Sneak Peek, a digital project that provides podcasts, videos, images — even a playlist of inspirational songs — leading up to the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale set to open on May 22, 2021.
Directed by Hashim Sarkis, the 17th International Architecture Exhibition — delayed one year due to the coronavirus pandemic — is titled How will we live together? The theme, developed in the pre-pandemic "context of widening political divides and growing economic inequalities," calls on architects "to imagine spaces in which we can generously live together." The theme is discussed by Sarkis in the first video in the Biennale Architettura Sneak Peek. In conversation with Luca Molinari, Sarkis links the question, How will we live together?, to the current situation, expressing how the theme maintains its relevance — or is even strengthened by the pandemic:
Other sneak peeks include short videos on the National Participations, such as Austria (Platform Austria, curated by Peter Mörtenböck and Helge Mooshammer):
And Canada (Impostor Cities, curated by David Theodore, T B A / Thomas Balaban Architect):
Only a few national participations are currently online, but more should be added in the coming months. Same for videos by the architects participating in How will we live together?
Also online is the first of five planned podcasts that feature Sarkis speaking about "the five scales of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition as seen through the city of Venice, its history, and the way it exemplifies the overlap between these five scales of living together: As One Planet, Across Borders, As Emerging Communities, As New Households, Among Diverse Beings."
Lastly, Spotify is hosting the "official soundtrack of the Biennale Architettura 2021," with songs and compositions selected by invited participants as inspiring their projects or representing themselves and their professional practice.
