Harrow Manor Way, SE2 9RH Eltham, Great Britain

Abbey Wood is the proposed South Eastern terminus of Crossrail, the new high frequency, high speed rail link that is due to cross London from 2017. It is an area of socio-economic deprivation characterised by poor quality public realm. Marks Barfield Architects was appointed to lead a multi disciplinary team tasked with developing a holistic strategy to ensure that the socio-economic benefits derived from the new transport link were maximised, far reaching, sustainable and design led. The study was sponsored by Transport for London, London Development Agency, Greenwich and Bexley Councils, Crossrail and Network Rail.

The proposed interchange design locates the main station building at high level centrally over the tracks, adjacent to the bus stops on Harrow Manorway. This ensures that the interchange between bus and train is clear, direct and easy without compromising connection to other modes of transport. The interchange will be clearly visible and accessible from all directions of approach and also attempts to mend the severance caused by both the railway and the road bridge that crosses it..
