The project won first prize in an architectural competition for a new psychiatric care and research building in central Uppsala. The project is approximately 34,000 m2.
The building is planned for specialized psychiatry within the county, and is located in the core area of the Uppsala University Hospital campus. It shall accommodate the psychiatry division's outpatient care, approximately 96 in-patient beds, administration, as well as teaching and research facilities. The goals of the project are to improve psychiatric care processes, create clear connections with somatic care, and to integrate research and teaching into patient care.
The new building is a long continuous structure with a large skylit courtyard at its core and two smaller courtyards. The lower level includes the emergency room/intensive care, a psychiatric observation ward, and somatic care services. At the entrance level the important general- and public functions like information, a library, restaurant, café, lecture hall, teaching rooms, and a waiting area are located. Floors 1-4 include in-patient and outpatient care. Research and teaching rooms are distributed among all the floors. Workplaces for the various departments and patient care areas, as well as group rooms for research and education, are located near each other and around the courtyards. Vertically the building's structure is in principle identical on each floor level.
