The Lobby is located in a residential building designed by Emory Roth and Partners and erected circa 1961. The design concept was to create a warm and inviting space by enhancing original details with color and materials in keeping with fundamental modernist traditions. A color scheme was developed to compliment existing materials and enhance a variety of focal points. The Tower East design focused on refurbishing existing materials, such as the Brazilian rosewood and the terrazzo columns. New dynamic features such as a Concierge desk, bronze framed mirror, bronzed bead curtain, architectural lighting, gilded coffer, richly colored and textured furniture and carpet, were added to create an elegant and comfortable atmosphere. The basic modernist credo of blurring the spatial distinction of the outside to the inside is maintained and enhanced. The Tower East lobby renovation remains true and respectful to modernist precepts of the early moderns while harking boldly to the future.
