This project was an interior renovation of one floor of an old building that had been in use, without maintenance, for 40 years. The renovation budget was just one fifth of what is typical, so we chose to utilize the original finishing materials but repaint, adjust the color scheme, and pull down some elements. We wanted to create an interior that blended nostalgia and newness and respected the accumulation of time.
Brown elements such as handrails, partitions, gates, and shelves are scattered throughout the space. These elements serve as signs that lead visitors from the entrance to the shop on the second floor. They are arranged to link the spaces and gently guide the flow of people through them.
