For the Museum of Modern Art’s initial presence beyond its midtown home, we created a contemporary retail environment for the new Design Store in SoHo within the bounds of a Landmarked building in a historic district. The design, which emphasizes light and suppleness, maintains some of the structural elements of the original warehouse. A polyvinyl membrane stretches across the ceiling of the space, along one wall of the ground floor, and down to the cellar floor in one, continuous curve. Illuminated with a soft, cool glow, this structure-within-a-structure functions as a light box, emanating light from the inside out while revealing the interior to curious passersby.
