SECOND PLACE IN INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION
Dakar Island, through an integrated approach, has become a beacon of urban development in Iraq. By combining tradition and modernity, we highlight the island's rich heritage, paying homage to its deep-rooted history, and showcasing the potential of modern urban planning.
We envision Dakar Island as an architectural oasis symbolizing urban revitalization. It provides comfort and relaxation for citizens, reflecting local cultural symbols, respecting our shared heritage, and incorporating Islamic patterns.
Our design emphasizes change and repetition. Using a grid system, we embed spaces for markets and cultural centers. This grid is enhanced by wind catchers, weaving together the urban landscape and connecting the parking areas to the bustling activity above.
Drawing inspiration from the wisdom of Middle Eastern architecture, we have designed walls for shading and water features for cooling. The structures utilize local materials such as rammed earth and hollow bricks, ensuring efficient insulation, ventilation, and sustainability.
