The project is for a large student residence along with supplementary program, adjacent to the main IIIT-B campus. The program is maximized on the new site with a high rise hybrid typology chosen in order to preserve open space in the existing campus.
Generic design is a linear strip of individual rooms serviced by a doubly loaded corridor and interspersed with elevators, stairs, toilets, laundry facilities & lounges. The overlay creates a complex and varied rhythm of individual rooms, common facilities and social spaces.
The generic strip is folded to fit the irregular site, leaving statutory setbacks on the periphery. The resultant central open space forms a strong focal point for the student community. A grand staircase extends the semi-public upper plaza onto the hyper public lower plaza, and further down to the parking level.
The program is organized by stacking the residential spaces on top of the public amenities and services. The double height terrace lounges are placed to create alternate diagonal routes for informal movements via the social spaces.
The programs are visually distinguished by use of materials; exposed concrete for the service areas, green marble and kota stone in the public spaces and white plaster for the residences.
